A water main break just outside of Peachtree City Monday afternoon caused water service to be lost temporarily for an undetermined number of homes in the area, officials said.

The break was caused by contractors working on land preparation activities for the widening of Ga. Highway 74 S. The water main break occurred near Redwine Road and sent water shooting high in the air, giving the appearance of a geyser.

The break was repaired by crews with the Fayette County Water System, according to Water System Director Tony Parrott.

Parrott said at mid-day Tuesday that he was unsure which areas lost service due to the water main break, but that information should be available by Wednesday morning.
