Nominations are being accepted for persons interested in filling the unexpired seat of Fayette County Superior Court Judge Johnnie L. Caldwell Jr., who resigned earlier this week.

Gov. Sonny Perdue has decided to fill the judgeship instead of holding a special election. The seat does not come back up for re-election until November 2012.

Nominations for the position are to be sent to the Judicial Nominating Commission by May 3. Nominations may be mailed to the commission at 30 Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard, NW, Suite 700, Atlanta, Ga. 30308, by fax too 1-866-547-3433 or by email to [email protected].

Each nominee will receive a questionnaire to be returned on or before May 17, and applicants will be interviewed by the commission May 24.

The commission will narrow the list of candidates to as many as five candidates, and the governor’s appointment will come from this list of recommended nominees.

The judge will serve the entire Griffin Judicial Circuit, which includes Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Upson counties.
