Officials are planning for a 5,000-square-foot expansion to the Fayette County Library in Fayetteville.

The renovations will be split up, with about 1,000 square feet added to the large meeting room that hosts a number of functions. The other 4,000 square feet will be added to create a new reading room on the opposite side of the library that will also create more room for bookshelves.

The meeting room addition will not only add more room for seating but also for a fixed stage to be installed. Also, the reading room will include some tables and study areas along with several meeting rooms for private groups to study together.

Funds for the project will come from remaining funds from a special purpose local option sales tax years ago of which a percentage was set aside for improvements to the library. This project will spend the remaining funds from that SPLOST account, officials said.

Construction on the project is expected to wrap up in August 2011, officials said.

Bids have not yet been solicited for the work, but that part of the process is expected to commence soon.
