Detroit Lion receiver Calvin Johnson got a hero’s welcome from the crowd at Sandy Creek tonight as his old jersey number was retired.

With a smile, the bashful-looking Johnson waved to the crowd as it gave him a standing ovation upon his entrance at the pre-game ceremony. Johnson, whose Lions have a bye this weekend, said after the ceremony that he was pleased to return to his alma mater and he was very appreciative of the Sandy Creek staff and fans.

Johnson also stuck around on the sidelines during the game, as young ballboys and other children on the sidelines got an up close and personal view of an NFL star in the making. The poised Johnson also exchanged pleasantries with former coaches including Head Coach Chip Walker and also several referees.

Johnson also obliged fans on the sidelines who wanted pictures, and you can bet the kids will remember the day they met a real pro, and class act, in Calvin Johnson.

Oh and the game? Sandy Creek remained undefeated with a 38-0 win over Spalding.
