Two weeks ago, at the annual Flint River Council Eagle Scout banquet, five Silver Beaver Award winners were announced and two of the recipients — Carl Lowry and Ute Whatley — were from Peachtree City’s Troop 75.

The Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service is the highest and most esteemed award that a Boy Scout council can give out each year.

Recipients of this award are registered adult leaders who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council. The Silver Beaver Award is given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service. It is given to those who do not actively seek it.

Both Lowry and Whatley have actively supported Boy Scouting for well over a decade and continue to do so now. Both teach merit badge classes. Lowry currently serves as the District Communications Coordinator and Advisor to the Fayette District Committee, while Whatley is the council’s Eagle Scout Board of Review Chairman, a job she’s held for over six years.

Earning the Silver Beaver Award is impressive enough on its own, but having two recipients from the same Troop is practically unparalleled.

Boy Scout Troop 75 is chartered by the Peachtree City United Methodist Men and meets Tuesday evenings in the Scout Lodge behind the Peachtree City United Methodist Church on Robinson Road.

The Flint River Council comprises eight counties — Butts, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Pike, Spalding and Upson — and serves nearly 10,000 youth and adult volunteers.
