Seyi Amosu and Dillon Roseen of the Starr’s Mill Speech and Debate team are Georgia’s 2011 state champions in Duo Interpretation. They topped their competition at the GFCA state tournament held at Georgia Tech March 25-26. Duo is a competitive drama event in which both students play multiple roles as the team performs a ten minute piece. Amosu and Roseen’s piece was from the movie “Toy Story.”

Starr’s Mill’s other top finishers at the state tournament were Jacob Nails and Brent Huang, both quarter-finalists in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Paige Neary and Diana Ricketts, semi-finalist in Duo; and Valerie Harrison, semi-finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking.

In addition to winning the state tournament, Amosu and Roseen qualified for the National Forensics League’s National Tournament at the district qualifier held on Feb. 25 and 26 at Starr’s Mill.  This will be Amosu’s fourth year to go to Nationals putting her in an exclusive group of less than twenty students out of the 3,000 expected to compete at the tournament this summer in Dallas, according to a NFL spokesperson.  Also qualifying to the national tournament are Georgia Brunner, Austin Russell, Nails and Huang.

The SMHS Speech and Debate team is coached by Juliana Wright and Sean Hickey. To find out more about the team go to www.starrsmilldebate.com.
