To kick off the 2011 hurricane season, the National Weather Service in Peachtree City will host the Air Force Reserve “Hurricane Hunter” plane at a special event June 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The public will have a chance to tour the aircraft and meet crew members of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, who will be available at the city’s Falcon Field airport.

Also, the weather service will offer tours of its office to help residents learn more about operations, monitoring weather systems and ways to take action to protect life and property.

More than 4,000 people came to this event the last time it was held in 2009, officials said.

The American Red Cross and other emergency management agencies will also be participating in the event.

The 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season is expected to be an active one. Capable of producing damaging winds, heavy rain and isolated tornados, such storms have impacted north and central Georgia.
