July was a historic month in the year 1864 for Newnan, Coweta County. Not only were Newnan’s seven hospitals filled with hundreds of Confederate wounded brought in from other battles, on July 30, a cavalry battle was fought 3 miles south of town at Brown’s Mill. Both Confederate and Union wounded were brought in to be treated by the doctors and nurses located here. Life was never the same in Newnan after that day.

During July, 2011, as part of the Sesquicentennial of the War Between The States, the Brown’s Mill Battlefield Association will be hosting a Lecture Series entitled “Coweta and the Confederacy.”  Everyone is invited at no cost to come and enjoy the different speakers.

On Tuesday, July 12th, at 7 p.m., Elizabeth Beers will be speaking on “Life in the Hospitals in Newnan” at the remodeled courthouse in the town square.
On Sunday, July 17th,  at 2 p.m., John Poole will speak on “Fightin’ Joe Wheeler and the Georgia Cavalry.”

And on Sunday, July 24th, at 2 p.m., Kerry Elliott and Sandra Parker will speak on “Local Collections: Documenting the Battle of Brown’s Mill.” Both events will be held at the History Center, in the former Atlanta and West Point Railroad Depot.

Saturday, July 30th, at 10:30 a.m., a barbeque will be held at the New Coweta Fairgrounds on Pine Road. Well known author, David Evans, who wrote “Sherman’s Horseman,” will be speaking. There is no charge for the lecture, but if you wish to chow down on the barbeque, there is a $10 charge.
