Copper thefts are not uncommon anywhere these days. But the weekend theft of copper-laden cooling components at Score Indoor Sports off Ga. Highway 74 in Fairburn came with a word of advice from the company that might help prevent similar thefts at other businesses.

The theft occurred between 6:30 p.m. on July 31 and 8 a.m. the following day, said Score Indoor General Manager Ian Vanderkley. Landscapers arriving at the site on Oakley Industrial Boulevard Monday morning found that some of the piping and cooling coils from the large cooling units had been removed.

While the indoor sports facility has been open for several years and though there have been no other thefts, Vanderkley said the company is taking additional precautions to make any attempt to repeat the theft less successful. Those precautions, he said, might help other businesses and buildings steer clear of vandalism and thefts.

Vanderkley said the company is installing cages around the cooling units and will likely install video cameras to bolster security.

Yet another security feature, one that has been added by an area church, involves adding an alarm on air conditioning and other cooling units that signals the alarm company when a pressure switch inside the outer panel that is activated when the panel is removed.
