The fifth-grade students at Crabapple Lane Elementary School designed, created, then electrically wired shoebox rooms as a means of meeting Georgia Performance Standards for science. The students acted as collaborative engineers and problem solvers to create their unique designs. Each room had working light switches, parallel and series circuits, and additional room accessories to highlight their creativity. The student’s projects met the fifth-grade science standard which is to determine the necessary component for completing an electric circuit and to investigate common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity. This project was made possible due to the generosity of the Coweta Fayette EMC Bright Ideas Grant, which was awarded to fifth-grade teacher Pat Costa earlier this year.
