Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church is taking a fresh approach to its annual stewardship campaign when Abundant Joy is launched Oct. 6. The church will collect monies to help Liberdade United Methodist Church located in Mozambique, Africa, to buy Bibles and hymnals.

“I believe ‘Miracles for Mozambique’ is a mission everyone will rally around and support,” said Dr. Mark Jordan, pastor of Cokes Chapel.

“My prayer is that Miracles for Mozambique will bring hope to many in our church and community,” said The Rev. Joao (John) Sambo. Sambo said most of the church’s 1,200 members are literate, but few have the money to buy a Bible or hymnal.

“While budgets and bills are important, sharing and shining the love of Christ is absolutely essential. The mission of the church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world,” said Jordan. He also said the entire congregation is asked to forgo non-essential purchases in order to assist with the effort. “Our goal is to raise $2,000 in October for the mission; I am confident we can do it.”

While Sambo and Jordan have never met, they say they are united in the belief that the love of Christ breaks down barriers and binds all believers together through faith.

The local community is also encouraged to “Be Part of the Miracle” by supporting the mission project. Donations should be earmarked “Miracles for Mozambique” and all funds will be directed toward the purchases.
