The Fayette County Commission on Oct. 8 agreed to purchase 4.2 acres adjacent to the Peachtree City Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) building on Ga. Highway 74 South to be the home of the new Fayette County Animal Shelter.

The first step in the process that will lead to the construction of a new animal shelter came on Oct. 8, with other aspects of the process expected at the Oct. 22 commission meeting.

Commissioners on Oct. 8 on a 4-0-1 vote approved $71,400 for the acquisition of 4.2 acres and two access easements from WASA as the site of the new animal shelter. The parcel is adjacent to, and situated on the south side of, the WASA building on Hwy. 74 South.

The new site is within a half mile of the current site on Hwy. 74 North.

The agenda item noted that Peachtree City has proposed to have the animal shelter relocated from its existing location, near the intersection of Hwy. 74 South and Holly Grove Road, to the parcel adjacent to the WASA building.

Peachtree City wants to purchase the current animal shelter property from the county and convert it for public safety purposes, such as a quick-response EMS site.

Commissioner Charles Rousseau said he was abstaining from the vote until he could see additional details.
