0Science was in action at Spring Hill Elementary, and the Suns had a slimy good time as the 5th grade classes of Katie Gay and Ashley Tarver studied earthworms and sardines.
The activating activity was designed to spark interest in the study of vertebrates and invertebrates. Students were first given a worm and asked to make observations on how it moved, followed by a class discussion about what they noticed.
Next, they were then given a sardine. They dissected it to see if it had bones or any other structure to help it move. After identifying the backbone, they explained that the worm and sardine are classified into two different groups: Vertebrates and invertebrates.
