Gregory Cecil Clifton, age 69, went to be with the Lord on January 3rd, 2025, due to complications from pneumonia. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Frances Clifton, his children, Emily Clifton, Vivian (Christopher) Munn, Anna Marie (Matty) Clifton-Goodman, Eleanor (Tyler) Preston, Gregory (Blair) Clifton; granddaughters Liv, Lorraine, and Aria;and siblings Jon, Jeff (Laura Shamrock), and Connie (Butch) Peacock. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Norma Clifton and his sister-in-law Bobbie McWaters.
Greg was born on November 2, 1955, in Champaign, Illinois, the third son of Bob and Norma. After living in Texas for a short time, the family moved to Georgia, settling in Fayette County in the late 1950’s.
Greg graduated from Fayette County High School in 1973 and graduated from The University of Georgia in 1980 with a BS in botany and secondary Science Teaching Certificate. Greg was an active member of the religious community at UGA, a practice which he continued throughout his life. In Fayetteville, he attended various Bible study and prayer groups, he was active in Fayette Bible Church and Congregation Ammudin Messianic Jewish Church, and served on the Board of Directors for Amazing Grace Evangelical Ministries, inc. Greg had a lifelong love of learning, was a beekeeper, and a bible scholar. He was teaching via zoom at a Bible College in Nepal and had planned to visit the country in 2025.
Greg spent his career in sales and was the first employee at Computer and Control solutions, inc. selling industrial computer equipment to clients such as The U. S. Postal Service, NASA, the NFL, and The U.S. Army.
Greg’s fulfillment came from being a husband, father and grandfather, from his faith, and from serving the community. He was Mayor of Fayetteville from January 2012 to December of 2015. During his term, he promoted the economic development of his hometown, improved infrastructure, and opened Fayetteville’s third fire station. Bringing Trilith (Pinewood Studios) and Georgia Military College to Fayetteville were two of the highlights of his life.
Greg was known for his sense of humor and positive spirit. He never met a stranger, participating in many different social circles, he claimed friends from all walks of life. Greg exemplified the commandments “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” and “love your neighbor as yourself.”
A celebration of life will be held at Mowell’s Funeral Home in Fayetteville on Saturday, February 8th, at 2 p.m. followed by a reception at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church in theFellowship Hall.
