Fayette County Board of Education opts out of HB581

The Fayette County Board of Education opted out of HB 581 on Monday night. This vote was unsurprising as Fayette County voters already have a similar homestead exemption already in place.

This opt out will simplify the tax structure and book keeping as HB 581 was not a straight cap like the one Fayette already had in place and would have required a second calculation to comply with the law.  Many other systems have also either opted out or begun the process to consider opting out, similar to Coweta County.

Now citizen groups are forming to lobby legislators for local legislation to allow them to vote for a local homestead provision like Fayette already has in place. Coweta County School Board has also made their own proposal for local legislation.  See more at:
