Sara Harp Minter Elementary used their knowledge of equivalent fractions to bake up pizza pies.
Holly Rivers’s 3rd grade class completed a Georgia Department of Education math lesson called Pizza Party. The activity asks students to put on their chef hats to compare fractions to fulfill different orders.
Students used their knowledge of unit fractions in order to put 1/4, 1/8, and halves of toppings correctly on a pizza. When students were done, their partner double checked their “order” and signed off if it was correct.
“My hope was after this lesson they were more familiar in their knowledge of equivalent fractions as well as their abilities to compare fractions with the same denominator,” said Rivers. “We love doing these hands-on lessons in math from the Department of Education.”
