Jay Maxwell, Newnan, was selected as the 2023 Marine of the Year by the Sergeant Clyde Thomason Medal of Honor Detachment #1325 serving Fayette and Coweta counties. Maxwell has served in a number of leadership positions in the local detachment and in the state of Georgia.

He most recently served two terms as the Commandant of #1325 and now serves as the Jr. Past Commandant. He is also active in the Coweta Veterans Club. Maxwell has led in  charity events such as the Toys for Tots program that helped put toys into the hands of over 6,000 local children each year, and has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for veteran’s charities, including local endeavors.

The selection of Marine of the Year is made by members of the detachment and the final decision is made by a select committee of detachment members who have been previously named a Marine of the Year.

The local detachment meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Christ the King Church, 4881 Hwy. 34 E., Sharpsburg. All honorably-discharged Marines, FMF Navy Corpsmen and FMF Navy Chaplains are welcome to attend and join. For more information, email [email protected].
