Adeline Harper gave back to a local school in a beautiful way. Together with her Scouts BSA troop, Harper, a junior at Starr’s Mill High, painted a large mural of a USA map at North Fayette Elementary.

The mural was a pivotal project for Harper as she pursued her Eagle rank with Scouts BSA. It was also an opportunity to give back to the school where her mother, Tina, is an enrichment teacher.

“I have great memories of playing on a similar giant US map that was painted on my elementary school playground,” said Adeline. “I want to give the kids hopefully the fun and educating experience that I had.”

She connected with then-Principal Dr. Lisa Moore, and they settled on restoring a recreational area and painting a giant US map.

“I felt very happy with the final product. It went from a dusty, dark concrete slab to a bright vibrant play area,” said Harper. “I like being able to look back at the pictures and see the progress that was made.”

Dr. Moore was thrilled to be approached about the project.

“When a student gives back to our school or any school, it says to me that they not only value education but that, somewhere along the way, a caring adult helped them love and appreciate school,” she said. “School isn’t just about academics, it’s also about community, and these scouts definitely understand this concept because they chose to feed into our students and our community. For that I am grateful.”
