Fayette adds 2 more local fatalities —

At 178 fatalities, Feb. 6 was a record high day for Covid deaths in Georgia. Fayette added 2 more victims to its county toll of coronavirus deaths, now at 108, according to the daily report from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

The most recent Fayette fatalities are a 77-year-old white woman and a 56-year-old African-American man, neither of whom had any underlying medical conditions.

While daily numbers of new cases have been falling statewide, deaths from earlier diagnosed cases continues to be high. The cumulative total number of Covid deaths is now 13,324. The previous daily high of deaths was 170 on Jan. 19. And the cumulative death rate of all confirmed Covid cases has risen slightly from 1.6% on Jan. 11 to its current rate of 1.73%, DPH is reporting.

Across Georgia, 3,221 new cases were reported Saturday, bringing the pandemic state total to 769,825.

In Fayette, 52 new cases were reported Feb, 6, and the new county total is 5,381, DPH said.

The 2-week positive test rate in Fayette has fallen to 9.5%, meaning that just under 1 person gets a confirmed Covid test result out of every 10 persons tested. That’s a key measurement of the direction of pandemic numbers. The comparable state rate is 12.4%.
