An early morning chase in north Coweta County led to the arrest of an Atlanta man after he wrecked the vehicle in the Arbor Springs area.

The incident unfolded on May 10 at 2:49 a.m. when Deputy John Hubbartt observed a black Honda Pilot speeding on Interstate 85 at mile marker 53, according to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

Hubbartt attempted to pull the SUV over but the driver, 21-year-old Atlanta resident Donta Thomas, accelerated and exited the interstate at Exit 51, reports said.

“The chase continued into the Arbor Springs subdivision off U.S. Highway 29 North. Deputy Hubbartt called in the tag off of the SUV and learned that it was a stolen vehicle out of Atlanta, and that the subjects were armed and dangerous,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Hubbartt lost site of the vehicle on Arbor Springs Plantation Drive, but subsequently located it pulling out of Rose Arbor Court. Hubbartt then activated his lights and siren once again and Thomas increased his speed, refusing to pull over.

“Thomas then turned onto Greenridge Way, where he lost control of the SUV and crashed into several mailboxes and then a large tree. Thomas then ran from the vehicle into the woods,” reports said. “Two juveniles were located inside the vehicle and were taken to the hospital. While checking the area for the fleeing subject, Sgt. Jason Wood saw a male subject matching the description of the driver. Thomas was taken into custody without further incident.”
