In my last column, I shared the views of the Libertarian Party of Fayette County on a wide range of local and national issues. This week, we continue the series by turning to the Democratic Party.

To better understand how local party leaders are thinking about the political challenges we face, I sent the same set of questions to the Democratic, Republican, and Libertarian parties of Fayette County. Each party was invited to respond in their own words. What follows are the full, unedited answers from State Representative Derrick Jackson, speaking on behalf of the local Democratic Party.

Representative Jackson’s responses highlight a vision grounded in equity, access, and long-term investment in public institutions. From national topics like the Trump presidency and the economy to local issues like housing, education, and community development, his answers reflect a belief in the role of government to protect rights, expand opportunity, and support those who are often left behind.

Whether you agree or disagree, this is a chance to hear directly from a Democratic leader who is helping shape the future of our community. No edits. No filters. Just a clear expression of how one side of the political spectrum sees the path forward.

Please briefly describe who you are and your role or involvement with your local party organization.

Hello Kenneth, thank you for sharing my thoughts and responses to your newspaper article. I am Derrick Jackson and currently serving in my 5th term as State Representative, House District 68. My political role in Fayette County is to represent the constituency of Fayette County in the Georgia General Assembly. It is an honor to contribute to this discourse and provide insight on the important matters shaping both our local and national landscape.

In your view, what have President Trump and the current Republican leadership in Congress done well?

The current administration has been disastrous, causing widespread disruption and dismantling the norms of our society. With the issuance of 142 Executive Orders, they have not only disrespected the Constitution and the Rule of Law but also fired innocent citizens from their federal jobs without any apparent reason. These actions have had a profound impact on millions of lives, undermining the principles that our nation stands for.

What have President Trump and the current Republican leadership done poorly or should have done differently?

The current administration has consistently made decisions that have led to widespread negative consequences (ie, Tariffs, No Due Process, Accepting Bribes, etc.), seemingly doing everything possible–wrong!

How does your party offer a different or better path forward than the opposition?

The Democratic Party has consistently been committed to telling the truth and upholding the integrity of our democratic processes. In stark contrast, the GOP continues to proliferate misinformation and disinformation, particularly regarding the 2020 election cycle results. Despite there being zero evidence to support the claim, they persist in telling citizens that the 2020 election was stolen. This ongoing spread of falsehoods undermines public trust and the very foundation of our democracy.

How would you assess the state of the U.S. economy since January 2025? What policies do you credit or blame for that outcome?

I would describe the U.S. economy with one word–turbulent! The current administration’s use of tariffs like a police baton and mob boss tactics to bully other countries has clearly led us from a very strong economy under President Joe Biden to a chaotic one, with economists now calling for a fiscal recession in the near future.

Many provisions in the 2017 tax reform bill are set to expire. What specific tax changes do you support or oppose?

I strongly oppose a tax cut for billionaires, as it continues to hurt and harm working families while adding to the debts and deficits of the United States. Moreover, I truly believe that Congress needs to keep their HANDS-OFF of social security, Medicaid, and Medicare!

What should be done to strengthen or reform Medicare?

Medicare could be significantly strengthened if billionaires and corporations paid their fair share of taxes. Currently, too many companies pay zero taxes, and billionaires continue to exploit loopholes to avoid paying anything in taxes.

What is your party’s position on the long-term sustainability of Social Security, and what changes (if any) would you propose? If you support cutting costs, how will that be done? If you support increasing services, how will that be financed?

Social Security should be a guarantee for all citizens who invest their dollars into it, which is why I do not support cutting costs. Again, the social security system should be strengthened by those billionaires who should be paying taxes.

Do you believe the U.S. government has struck the right balance between national security and individual liberties when it comes to the right of habeas corpus? Should this right ever be suspended, and under what circumstances?

As a retired military officer with 22 years of honorable service in the United States Navy, I strongly support national security. Additionally, I am a firm advocate for the protection of individual liberties and the right of habeas corpus, which should never be suspended. These rights are the keystones in preserving our democracy!

Should any president — including Trump — be allowed to serve more than two terms? Why or why not?

No president should be allowed to serve more than two terms! The 22nd Amendment is very, very clear–the president is limited to two terms only!

What are the most important issues facing Fayette County right now, and how is your party addressing them?

Fayette County must prioritize affordable housing for young professionals, as this demographic is vital to the future growth and sustainability of the community. Rising housing costs make it increasingly difficult for young workers to establish themselves here, which could ultimately impact the local economy and workforce. Addressing this issue by supporting housing initiatives that offer reasonable options for entry-level professionals is essential.

Additionally, Fayette County should explore opportunities to enhance family-friendly extracurricular activities. By investing in programs that inspire community relationship building, such as sports leagues, cultural events, and educational workshops, the county can foster a stronger, more connected community. These initiatives not only enrich the lives of residents but also make Fayette County an appealing place to live and raise a family and retire.

How has your party supported or opposed policies at the state level that impact Fayette County?

I have consistently supported legislation designed to enhance the quality of life for residents of Fayette County. From championing policies that address the critical need for affordable housing, ensuring young professionals can establish their roots here, to advocating for family-friendly extracurricular programs that foster community relationships, my commitment has remained steadfast. I believe that prioritizing these initiatives strengthens economic stability, cultural vibrancy, and social connections within Fayette County, ensuring it is a thriving place to live, work, and raise a family.

How does your party plan to support local schools and educational priorities in Fayette County?

The Democratic Party firmly believes that a strong public education system is the cornerstone of a thriving community and a prosperous nation. We are committed to ensuring that our schools are equipped not only with the necessary resources but also with innovative tools and strategies to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Teachers, as the architects of our future, must be empowered with competitive salaries, ongoing professional development, and access to state-of-the-art technology in the classroom.

To achieve this, the Democratic Party advocates for increased funding for public schools to bridge existing gaps and create equitable learning environments for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background. We also support the integration of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs, arts education, and vocational training into the curriculum to ensure that students graduate with a well-rounded education that prepares them for careers that are yet to emerge in our rapidly evolving global economy.

Additionally, we recognize the importance of reducing classroom sizes to foster better teacher-student interaction and providing mental health resources in schools to support students’ well-being. By investing in these critical areas, we aim not only to prepare students for future job markets but also to nurture their potential as innovative thinkers, compassionate leaders, and engaged citizens.

Our party remains steadfast in collaborating with local governments, educators, and communities to ensure that these goals are met effectively, reflecting our unwavering dedication to education as the foundation of our shared future.

How does your party view the current state of housing affordability and growth in Fayette County? What changes, if there are any, would you support?

To address the critical need for affordable housing for young professionals in Fayette County, it is essential to adopt policies that not only provide immediate relief but also foster long-term community growth and economic dynamism. Affordable housing initiatives play a pivotal role in expanding the local taxpayer base, as they attract a younger demographic eager to contribute to the prosperity of the region. By encouraging young workers to settle and invest in Fayette County, the community benefits from their energy, innovation, and diverse perspectives, which are vital for sustained development.

Creating a healthy mix of residential options—including affordable apartments, starter homes, and mixed-use developments—ensures that Fayette County remains competitive and appealing to professionals across various industries. Mixed-use residential areas that combine housing, retail, and recreational spaces are particularly effective in promoting vibrant neighborhoods where residents can live, work, and socialize nearby. This approach not only enhances the quality of life but also supports local small businesses and increases property values over time.

Furthermore, prioritizing affordable housing initiatives helps to stabilize the workforce by reducing the financial barriers that might otherwise force young professionals to seek opportunities elsewhere. When these individuals establish roots in the community, they contribute to a stronger local economy, participate in civic activities, and build the social fabric that makes Fayette County an attractive place to live. Supporting innovative funding models, such as public-private partnerships and tax incentives for developers who prioritize affordable housing projects, can accelerate progress in this area.

Ultimately, addressing housing affordability for young professionals is not just an economic imperative but also a social one. It ensures Fayette County thrives as a diverse, inclusive community where individuals from all backgrounds can envision their future, fostering a shared commitment to growth and prosperity for generations to come.

Specifically, what has your party done to benefit Fayette County or its residents?

One of my proudest accomplishments has been working tirelessly to prevent harmful legislation that could have had severe repercussions for the residents of Fayette County. I have fought to protect local resources, sustain our community’s economic vitality, and defend the fundamental rights of our residents against proposals that failed to serve their best interests. Whether these efforts involved advocating for environmental protections, opposing policies that would have increased the tax burden for middle- and low-income families, or ensuring that public education funding remained intact, I have consistently prioritized the needs and well-being of Fayette County.

While I am proud of the successes we have achieved in blocking such harmful measures, I also recognize that some detrimental legislation at the state level was beyond my ability to stop. This is a regret that motivates me to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing legislative challenges. I have learned valuable lessons from these experiences that have strengthened my resolve to build coalitions, engage with lawmakers, and amplify the voices of our community to influence better outcomes in the future.

My commitment to safeguarding Fayette County from legislation that could undermine its growth, equity, and quality of life remains unwavering. I will continue to work alongside elected officials, community leaders, advocates, and residents to ensure that our shared values and priorities are reflected in the policies that shape our future.

How do you see Fayette County changing politically in the next 5–10 years?

As Fayette County experiences a shift in demographics, the political landscape is poised to reflect the growing diversity and evolving values of its residents. This change is driven by the influx of young professionals, families, and individuals from varied backgrounds who are attracted to the county’s blend of vibrant communities, economic opportunities, and potential for long-term growth. These newcomers bring fresh perspectives and a desire for policies that prioritize inclusion, equity, and sustainable development.

With this infusion of new energy, I foresee an increasing alignment with Democratic values and initiatives that emphasize collaboration, social progress, and community-driven governance. Over the next 5–10 years, it is likely that Fayette County will see a rising number of Democrats elected at all levels of government—from local councils to state representation. This momentum will stem from a shared commitment to addressing pressing issues such as affordable housing, environmental stewardship, education reform, and healthcare access—matters that resonate deeply with an electorate seeking meaningful change.

The growth of Democratic influence in Fayette County will not only enable more responsive leadership but will also foster a political culture focused on inclusivity and innovation. By championing policies that reflect the priorities of a diverse constituency, Democratic leaders have the potential to reinforce a sense of trust and connection between residents and their government, ensuring that progress is both tangible and equitable.

This shift toward Democratic representation is not merely a trend but a reflection of the county’s transformation into a dynamic, forward-thinking community. As Fayette County continues to grow and adapt, its political landscape will serve as a testament to the power of collective action and shared ideals in shaping a brighter future.

Do you believe partisan politics are helping or hurting local governance in places like Fayette County?

Partisan politics, regardless of the level of governance, often prioritize ideological victories over the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. This approach creates division, erodes trust, and, most concerningly, results in policies that adversely impact citizens’ lives. When leaders become entrenched in party allegiance rather than focusing on pragmatic solutions, the very essence of governance—to serve the public good—is compromised.

In Fayette County, as in many places, the consequences of hyper-partisanship are evident. Issues that demand urgent and thoughtful attention—such as infrastructure, education, and public health—too often become battlegrounds for partisan agendas. This not only delays progress but also undermines meaningful dialogue and collaboration. What should be an inclusive process of policymaking turns into a zero-sum game where residents bear the brunt of inaction or poorly considered decisions.

The government should have a fundamental responsibility to “do no harm.” It should act as a steward of public trust, ensuring that policies enhance rather than diminish the quality of life for all citizens. When partisan politics take precedence, this responsibility is neglected. Instead of fostering unity and progress, partisanship breeds resentment and polarization, leaving communities fractured and disillusioned.

The current administration, like others before it, serves as an example of how partisan politics can derail effective governance. It is disheartening to witness leaders who appear more concerned with political wins than with the tangible needs of the people. Decisions made under such conditions often fail to account for the long-term ramifications, resulting in harm that ripples across generations.

To move beyond this harmful paradigm, we must demand accountability, transparency, and a renewed focus on bipartisan cooperation. Leaders must prioritize the needs of the people over party lines, embracing a governance model rooted in empathy, inclusivity, and evidence-based decision-making. By fostering an environment where collaboration trumps conflict, we can restore the public’s faith in government and ensure that progress is guided by a commitment to do no harm.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with readers about your party’s goals or values in 2025?

The Democratic Party has consistently demonstrated its unwavering commitment to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law, principles that are foundational to our democracy. This respect is not merely rhetorical; it is evident in the party’s policies and actions aimed at safeguarding individual rights, promoting justice, and ensuring a government that serves the people faithfully and equitably.

In today’s divisive political climate, where some factions disregard constitutional norms or manipulate them to serve partisan agendas, the Democratic Party remains steadfast in its dedication to these guiding principles. The Constitution is not just a document, but a shared promise to protect the freedoms, dignity, and rights of every citizen. It is through this lens that the democratic party approaches governance, ensuring that no individual or group is marginalized or left behind.

Respecting the rule of law means holding everyone accountable, regardless of their position or power. The Democratic Party understands that laws should be applied fairly and justly, not as tools of oppression or favoritism. This adherence to justice is critical to maintaining public trust and strengthening the fabric of our democracy.

Moreover, the Democratic Party recognizes the importance of individual rights as enshrined in the Constitution. Whether it is the right to vote, the right to free speech, or the right to equal treatment under the law, the party actively works to defend these freedoms against encroachments, ensuring that every citizen can fully participate in the democratic process.

As we look to the future, the Democratic Party’s goals and values are anchored in this commitment to constitutional governance. The Democratic party strives to lead with integrity, fostering a system where the government is not above the people but accountable to them. By championing policies rooted in fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law, the Democratic Party seeks to build a nation where the promise of democracy is realized for all.

If we are to navigate the challenges of our time and emerge stronger, we must rally behind a government that respects these foundational principles. The Democratic Party invites all citizens to join in this mission, working together to ensure a brighter, fairer, and more just future.
