JP Bierman, a graduating senior from McIntosh High School, has been accepted into Georgia Tech’s prestigious Stamps President’s Scholars Program. He will begin his studies in the fall,  majoring in economics and modern languages.

This competitive, merit-based program at Georgia Tech offers recipients a full-ride scholarship, $12,000 in enrichment funding, and more benefits such as personalized mentoring from faculty. For Bierman, receiving this scholarship felt like a meaningful culmination of his efforts in high school as well as a strong beginning to his college journey.

Academically, Bierman believes his rigorous coursework- including AP Physics- helped  him stand out, but his economics class with Mr. Kunz inspired his decision to pursue the subject in college. As far as after college, Bierman plans to become a lawyer focusing on international commerce law.

Beyond the classroom, Bierman demonstrated leadership as captain of McIntosh’s cross country team and president of the Beta Club. These roles further distinguished himself throughout the scholarship selection process.

In his college essay, Bierman shared his unique experience of learning Spanish outside of school and subsequently using the language to teach English to Spanish speakers. He believes this story of personal growth played an important role in his success.

For students applying to competitive programs, Bierman advises: “Have something that is unique about you and be able to make it into a story that shows how you have been able to grow over time, especially if it’s something you pushed yourself to get better at.”

Looking ahead, Bierman is most excited to meet fellow students at Georgia Tech, particularly during Tech Trek- a pre-semester backpacking trip with other Stamps Scholars in either Alaska or Colorado.
