Peachtree City Bans the Burning of Yard Debris Year-Round

The Peachtree City Council has enacted a new policy banning the burning of yard debris within city limits, effective May 15, 2025. This municipal ban builds on an existing Georgia law that prohibits outdoor debris burning from May 1 through September 30 each year.

Mayor Kim Learnard, explained that the local ban was largely driven by public health concerns, particularly its impact on children with allergies and respiratory issues.

“It really does impact their daily lives,” said Learnard. “What we were hearing from our citizens is that they were having to keep their children indoors, sometimes for days at a time.”

To support residents in complying with the new policy, the city is promoting alternative yard waste disposal options. Peachtree City residents can use the Rockaway Road Compost Facility, a free recycling center. Other disposal options include the Fayette County Transfer Station, which will accept yard debris for a fee (either by vehicle or scale), and local curbside trash haulers, who are required to offer yard debris pickup and may charge a service fee.

The policy will be enforced by Peachtree City Code Enforcement officers and fire inspectors. These officers are authorized to distribute tickets and level fines to violators.

This ban does not apply to recreational or cooking fires, which are still permitted as long as they comply with certain size and proximity restrictions. These restrictions can be found in detail on the Peachtree City website.

City officials hope to continue this policy in the coming years to protect the health and well-being of Peachtree City residents and their children.
