On June 12, Kiwanis Park marked a major milestone with the official groundbreaking of its long-awaited multi-purpose recreation center. The event brought together representatives from MEJA Construction, the Fayette County Parks and Recreation Department, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners, and other government officials who gathered to celebrate the beginning of an exciting addition to the area.

This new facility, with a proposed cost of 14 million dollars, was developed with a clear vision: to provide a dynamic space that will meet the community’s needs. The entry level will feature multi-use areas and courts, community rooms, classrooms, restrooms and locker areas, storage space, and offices. The upper level will have a walking/jogging path and an exercise area.

“This is one of those times we show our citizens that the government is working for them,” said State Representative Derrick Jackson “We are demonstrating quality of life, adding things for our children to do, and it’s great to see dreams come true.”

Following the ceremonial shovel turn, local leaders emphasized the importance of contributing to public spaces that will foster community connection and long-term growth.

“This is a very good day for this community as a whole,” said County Commissioner Charles Rousseau. “Thank you to all those citizens who use our parks on a regular basis”. 

Upon completion, the facility will become a state-of-the-art resource within the already popular Kiwanis Park.
