Andrew Fleming, a recent graduate of KONOS Academy, has been selected as one of the newest recipients of the prestigious Stamps Scholarship at Mercer University. Fleming will attend Mercer University in the fall, pursuing studies of history and political science with aspirations of attending law school and ultimately becoming a criminal defense attorney.

Each year, Mercer’s Stamps Scholars Program selects fewer than ten incoming students for this highly competitive scholarship. The award covers full tuition, fees, housing, and meals, and also provides recipients with an Apple iPad, and a $16,000 dollar enrichment fund. This fund can be used for experiences such as study abroad programs, academic research, unpaid internships, and attendance at conferences- opportunities that allow recipients to grow personally and professionally outside of the classroom.

Fleming’s road to this honor began with an invitation to Mercer’s Presidential Scholars Weekend, where standout applicants engage in interviews with faculty, staff, and alumni. After successfully advancing through this process as well as another round of interviews, Fleming received the exciting news that he had been selected. His admissions counselor and parents organized a surprise celebration at KONOS Academy to commemorate his achievement and the abundance of effort that lead up to it.

An integral part of Fleming’s high school experience-and a major contributor to differentiating him as a scholarship candidate- was his involvement in mock trial. Participating throughout his high school years and eventually becoming captain of the team, Fleming gained valuable skills in critical thinking, collaborative leadership, and public speaking.

“I got to learn how to really interact with and support my teammates, learning what each one of them needed,” said Fleming.

Under his leadership, the INVICTUS Advocacy Academy mock trial team achieved many wins at a national level. The team placed third at the in-person Yale Bulldog Invitational and won first place in the virtual tournament. They also advanced to the semi-finals at the Providence Cup Mock Trial Tournament in Denver, Colorado. At both events, Fleming was recognized with top attorney awards for his excellent performance.

These accomplishments were made possible not only by Fleming’s hard work and determination, but also by the unwavering support of his parents. He credits them with playing a critical role in his journey, supporting him throughout his academic endeavors in any and all ways possible.

“I think the way they were willing to sacrifice what they wanted in order to support me and let me have these different opportunities was invaluable in helping me get this scholarship,” he shared.

Upon visiting Mercer, Fleming was immediately drawn to the campus’s academic and welcoming environment. In the fall, he is most excited to immerse himself in his new coursework, as well explore Mercer’s mock trial team.  With the support of the Stamps Scholarship, Fleming is eager to participate in new learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.
