This summer’s run for Fayette County Public Schools’ book bus was a smashing success.
Across six locations around the county, children from birth to 12th grade were invited to pick out free books to spark their summer reading. The main mobile library table distributed approximately 500 books to 386 children, and that was just scratching the surface. Another roughly 500 books were given to 100 children ages 0-3 and 400-plus books were given to 109 children ages 3-5 through the Early Learning Book Giveaway. This is in addition to the hundreds of community-donated books that were gifted to all children ages 0-10.
It took a team of folks from Fayette County Public Schools to make it happen: Chrissy O’Neal, Melanie Duncan, Andrea Lakly, Kristin Hatten, Kristine Hemenway, Margarette Coleman, Shane Kuykendall, James Stanford, Amy Henley, Doris Rockhill, Dan Lane, Sarah DesLaurier, Matt Jackson, and Angie Southers all gave their time to man the many mobile library stops. They also got help from Cayden Mobley, a rising 8th grader at Bennett’s Mill Middle, who dressed as Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Southers, Director of After School Program and Early Learning, was thrilled with the turnout for the Early Learning Book Giveaway.
“We had a super successful experience,” she’s said.
