In a powerful act of compassion and community, Starr’s Mill High School organized an early graduation for rising senior Alejandro (Alex) Ruiz so that his mother, Sarah Ruiz, who is currently battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), could witness her son walk across the stage.
Mrs. Ruiz reached out to the school the Tuesday before graduation asking if there was anything they could do in order for her to see her son graduate, feeling that her health may not allow her to attend next year’s ceremony. The school responded quickly and with great care. Principal Jamie Voorhies and the Starr’s Mill faculty got working to make a special ceremony happy for Alejandro and his family.
The graduation ceremony was held the morning of the senior’s graduation. Alex, already scheduled to participate later that event as a Junior Marshal, was able to celebrate the milestone surrounded by family, friends, and a large amount of the school’s faculty.
“It was very unexpected to have all of the faculty show up,” said Alex Ruiz. “It means a lot to me, and especially shows how valued we are at Starr’s Mill.”
Mrs. Ruiz was deeply moved by the efforts of the community, expressing her gratitude for the outpour of love and support her and her family were shown in this difficult time.
“To see the entire community coming together to support one family was beautiful,” said Mrs. Ruiz. “It brings me a lot of peace knowing my kids are in such a loving community.”
The Ruiz family is extremely thankful for the school’s support, especially recognizing the empathy shown from Principle Voorhies.
“She truly went above and beyond,” said Mrs. Ruiz.
Principal Voorhies was happy to act out of love for her wonderful community, and hopes this is something her students embody as they walk out of the school’s doors- that love and kindness are gifts we can give every day.
“Our mission at Starr’s Mill is to empower individuals to learn, succeed and serve. Serving others with kindness, empathy and love is something we hold near to our hearts as a family and community at Starr’s Mill. This will forever be one of my favorite memories not only as a principal but as a person,” said Principal Voorhies. “Love is the greatest thing we have to offer and it was wonderful that our staff could show their love for this wonderful family in such an incredible way.”
The movement was more than a ceremony- it was a celebration that highlighted the strength in a caring community and the positive, abundant impact that compassion can make in a family’s life.
