The Fayette County Public Library is featuring a “Literacy through Art” exhibit created by The Joseph Sams School Early Intervention Classes. Misty Lackey, art educator at JSS, says the students followed a four-step process to create the artwork design to replicate the patchwork elephants, Elmer and Wilbur, from the children’s book series “Elmer” by author David McKee. Students learn about colors, letters, shapes and numbers while strengthening friendships and embracing differences according to Ms. Lackey.

“The library is the perfect setting to display the artwork of such talented students and increase the exposure of the dynamic efforts of the teachers at The Joseph Sams School,” said library director Chris Snell. “Patrons are enjoying the colorful elephants on display at the front entrance.”

The students from JSS frequently come to the library to enjoy the children’s programs and to visit the exhibit. This exhibit is an on-going partnership with The Joseph Sams School and the current display of Elmer and Wilbur will remain through the end of February.
