Lidl enters supermarket fray locally

Another European grocer will soon open in Fayetteville.

The Fayetteville City Council Thursday night unanimously approved a series of annexation and zoning requests to allow Lidl to set up shop where J&R Clothing is currently located on north Ga. Highway 85.

Since the Fayetteville store is over 35,000 sq. ft, store officials want it rezoned from C2 to C3 to allow for the bigger store.

The Planning Commission and staff recommended approval with three recommendations:

• Applicant provide combination plat with required signature lines (using Final Plat data from Code of Ordinance) signed by one entity.

• Obtain GDOT permit for site re-development.

• Provide written narrative of stormwater management.

Former Mayor Greg Clifton spoke in favor of the grocer coming to town, but wondered if it couldn’t set up shop in one of the city’s tax allocation districts, but was informed Lidl was very specific on the type of site it requires for building a store.

The approval process has taken more than a year because Lidl had to buy two different tracts of property to give it enough room for all the buffer requirements.
